One more time, Daft Punk is better, faster, stronger with the new song Derezzed, created for Tron: Legacy. The movie will come to the cinemas in December 2010 and the soundtrack is at least one good reason to watch it.

Cadbury accepts Kraft’s offer

On Monday night (18.01.2010) Cadbury’s board agreed to accept Irene Rosenfeld’s offer (CEO Kraft) for the takeover that had started four months ago. 840 pence (500p in cash + Kraft shares) + an additional 10p dividend is how much Kraft is going to pay for a Cadbury share. This values the UK confectionery group at £11.9 billions. More info here.

The reason why I have a particular interest in this deal is the fact that we had to simulate the “takeover battle” at the end of December 2009 for our Advance Corporate Finance final exam. Kraft’s bid at that point was 769/share and strangely enough, my evaluation using the free cash flows method was 846 pence/share.
Maybe this explains why I got an A. :)

Now, I’m just thinking.. If I had had a big bag of money to invest last month, I would have made some nice quick cash.

A visit to Bloomberg

I got the opportunity to visit Bloomberg London today. It was pretty impressive: a lot of security, packed with people working hard (not in cubicles), a nice kitchen/lounge at ground floor where employees get “free lunch”.

What seemed quite funny to me was the number of screens/employee growing as we were going up. 1st floor – 2 screens/employee, 2nd – 3, 3d – 4 screens/employee. I wonder what’s in the loft?!

Titu Andreescu was born in the Romanian city of Timi?oara in 1956. From an early age, an interest in mathematics was encouraged by both his father and uncle Andrew (haha), who was a retired university professor. As a high school student, he excelled in mathematics, and in 1973, 1974 and 1975 won the Romanian national problem solving contests organized by the journal Gazeta Matematic?.

After graduating from the University of Timi?oara, Andreescu was appointed a professor of mathematics at the Constantin Diaconovici Loga school of Mathematics and Physics. Between the years 1981–1989 he also worked as the editor-in-chief of the Periodical Revista mathematic? din Timi?oara. In 1990, as the Eastern Bloc began to collapse, Andreescu emigrated to the United States. He is now an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Places I’ve been

There are quite a few websites offering you this service, to create a map showing places you’ve been around the world, but most of them won’t allow you to have the map embedded into your website or blog. The free and fast solution for this comes from Google Maps and GMapEZ. You can find the tutorial here.

Be aware that WordPress interacts in a strange way with the JavaScript file you must use, therefore if you wanna have your map placed into a post or page you should create an external HTML file and include it there with iframe.

You have plenty of options to use when you add a location to your map: the one that I particularly like (and use) is to pop up an image when someone clicks the marker. It’s a cool way to show a picture of yourself from that place.

A whole day in Bath

I got to visit Bath last week-end, a small but great city, built around the hot springs and their history.

Bath (pronounced /?b???/) is a city in the ceremonial county of Somerset in the south west of England. It was first established as a spa resort with the Latin name, Aquae Sulis (“the waters of Sulis”) by the Romans in AD 43 although verbal tradition suggests that Bath was known before then. They built baths and a temple on the surrounding hills of Bath in the valley of the River Avon around hot springs, which are the only ones naturally occurring in the United Kingdom. (from wikipedia)

I dunno what’s with the strange instruments the old man is playing at, but they do sound and look cool.
